Winter Concert 2012
Mendelssohn Elijah
Sunday, January 29, 2012, 3:00 p.m.
Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City, NY
Mendelssohn was devoted to the music of Bach and Handel, and helped in the revival of their major works. In Elijah, Mendelssohn wrote a work that pays tribute to the oratorios of Handel and the extended works of Bach, conceived in the lyrical and dramatic Romantic style of Mendelssohn's day. He perceived Elijah as a work of fierce dramatic impact, and conveys his interpretation in the emotion, power and intensity of his music, sometimes expressing deep tenderness and love and other times evoking images of violent fire, flood and whirlwind. The 50-voice Mineola Choral Society and Orchestra will perform this inspiring masterpiece in the beautiful and acoustically excellent sacred space of Garden City’s Cathedral of the Incarnation.
Spring Concert 2012
Vivaldi Gloria
and music from
Gilbert & Sullivan, Porgy & Bess
and West Side Story
Saturday, May 12, 2012, 8:00 p.m.
Mineola High School, Garden City Park, NY
Vivaldi's Gloria is firmly established in the canon of great choral works. The piece features the rhythmic energy and harmonic and melodic expression associated with the late Baroque style. Vivaldi includes some of his most expressive and well crafted choral writing in this major work. Gilbert and Sullivan produced some of the most durable operettas in the repertoire, and the Mineola Choral Society will be performing choral selections that feature the clarity of texture, engaging melodies, and sparkling lyrics associated with their music. George Gerhswin's opera Porgy and Bess broke new ground in American music and in the world of opera. The chorus will be singing some of the memorable music from this Gershwin masterpiece. Our spring concert will conclude with a medley from Bernstein’s West Side Story, one of the great works from the American musical theater.
